The idea of commissioning a bespoke garden structure can seem intimidating if you haven’t done it before. The reality is that the process is simpler than most people think, and a skilled maker will guide you through it from the initial consultation to the final installation. Here is what to expect when you commission a bespoke timber garden structure from Stuart Garden Architecture.
You do not need a detailed brief to begin
Many of our best commissions began with a photograph of something admired in someone else’s garden, a vague idea of the kind of structure a client desired, or simply a feeling that a garden needed something but without a clear image of what. You do not need a specification or a technical brief to make contact. What matters at the start is just establishing contact and beginning the conversation.
That first conversation, whether by phone, email, or through our contact form, is about understanding. What do you want? What is the garden like? What does the structure need to do? Are there any constraints regarding space, access, or existing architecture? It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We will then discuss the options and start to create a picture of what the right solution might look like.
Measurements and site visits
For most bespoke garden commissions, precise measurements of the area are essential before beginning detailed design. For simpler projects, you might be able to supply these yourself, and we can advise you on exactly what is required. For more complex or large-scale commissions, or where the design must respond accurately to existing levels, architecture, or planting, a site visit from one of our designers will provide us with everything needed to create an accurate design.
A site visit presents an opportunity to discuss ideas directly at the location, gaining a clearer understanding of what you see and how the structure needs to integrate. Site visits are chargeable; however, the fee is fully refunded if an order is subsequently placed. If you wish to visit our Somerset workshop to see how our structures are produced before making a commitment, we welcome appointments.
From sketch to scaled drawing
Once we have a clear understanding of your needs and the measurements involved, we commence the design process. We usually begin with a pencil sketch or a selection of photographs from our previous work to set the direction of the design, before moving on to CAD drawings. For more complex projects, 3D visuals can also be created so you can see the structure in context before anything is produced.
The outcome of this process is a detailed scaled drawing and an itemised quotation, both of which are reviewed with you before any order is placed. This is the stage where revisions occur. We are experienced in listening to feedback and working through changes until the design is right. Nothing is final until you are satisfied with what you see on paper.
Placing the order
Once the design is approved and you’re ready to move forward, a 50% deposit secures the commission, and production begins at our workshop in Wiveliscombe, Somerset. Lead times vary based on the size and complexity of the project, typically 4 to 18 weeks. We confirm your lead time at the point of order and keep you updated throughout the manufacturing process, so you are always aware of the progress.
For clients working with a landscape architect, garden designer, or main contractor, we are experienced at coordinating with other parties and can work to a wider project timeline where needed. We are flexible, and we understand that programmes change.
Installation and completion
Once your structure is ready, we will contact you to organise delivery or installation. The team that installs your structure is the same one that built it, and they bring the same care to your garden as they do in the workshop. After completing a private installation, we walk through the finished work with you, answer any questions, and leave you with full care and maintenance instructions tailored to the specific timber and finish.
The entire process, from initial contact to final installation, is designed to be as clear and simple as possible. If anything changes along the way, we adapt. The goal remains the same: to create a structure that is perfectly suited to you and your garden.
