Eco Policy
We have a duty towards the materials we utilise, the processes we employ, and the gardens we work in. That responsibility shapes how we source timber, operate our workshop, and consider the structures we build. We take these responsibilities seriously and constantly seek ways to improve.
Built to last:
the most sustainable choice
The most vital environmental commitment we uphold is in the quality of our creations. A structure designed to last for decades does not require replacement. It does not turn into waste. The timber used to build it does not need to be extracted, processed, and transported again. This is the strongest argument for doing things properly, and it has always been central to how Stuart Garden Architecture operates.
We choose timber species for their natural durability and suitability for outdoor use. These are not selections based solely on appearance; they are made because the right timber for a specific application will still be standing long after lesser options have failed. Longevity is not just about quality, but also an environmental responsibility.
Timber sourcing
All timber used by Stuart Garden Architecture is sourced from UK merchants holding timber accreditation, ensuring every piece of wood we use comes from legally and responsibly managed sources. Our merchants hold FSC certification, providing further assurance that the supply chain complies with internationally recognised standards for responsible forestry.
Timber species are selected not only for their properties but also for their suitability for outdoor use without heavy chemical treatment. Many of the species we work with are naturally resistant to rot and insect attack, which reduces the need for preservatives throughout the structure’s lifespan.
In the workshop
We work hard to minimise waste at our Somerset workshop. Smaller timber offcuts are utilised in manufacturing our diamond trellis panels rather than being thrown away. Sawdust produced during the process is sold to be processed into heat briquettes, ensuring that even the finest waste from the workshop is given a useful second life instead of going to landfill.
The workshop uses LED lighting throughout, and we operate without single-use plastics in our daily processes.
Packaging & delivery
When structures are delivered by courier, we use recycled cardboard and foam wrap for packaging. When we make our own deliveries, items are secured with reusable blankets and straps instead of disposable materials, minimising single-use packaging and maximising reuse of available resources.
