our approach
Every commission is unique. The garden, the brief, and the people involved all vary. What remains constant is our way of working. At Stuart Garden Architecture, our approach to every piece of bespoke joinery is consistent, whether it is a single garden gate or a large-scale architectural project: we listen first, and we do not start designing until we fully understand what is required.
it starts with a conversation
You can contact us in the way that suits you best, by phone, email, or the contact form. From there, we will arrange a chat to discuss your ideas, your garden, and what you hope to achieve. There’s no pressure or obligation at this stage. It’s simply an opportunity for us to understand your vision and for you to get a sense of how we work.
Many of the finest pieces of garden joinery we have crafted began as a rough idea or a photograph of something admired in another garden. We are accustomed to working from almost nothing and equally comfortable working to a detailed architect’s specifications. Both serve as good starting points.
From sketch to scaled drawing
Once we understand your needs clearly, we will start developing the design. Depending on the project’s complexity, this may begin with a pencil sketch or a selection of photographs from our previous work to help focus ideas. From there, we progress to CAD drawings and, occasionally, 3D interpretations if required to bring the idea to life before production commences.
Measurements are obtained either directly from you or during a site visit, where our designers visit the garden in person to survey the area, evaluate the conditions, and record all necessary dimensions. Site visits are chargeable, but the fee is fully refunded if an order is placed. Drawings can also be prepared before a formal order is confirmed; again, this incurs a charge and is refunded upon order.
Once the design is agreed, we produce a detailed scaled drawing and an itemised quotation. Revisions are part of the process, and we work through them with you until the design is exactly right.

Handcrafted at our Somerset workshop
Once the design is approved, manufacturing begins at our traditional workshop in Wiveliscombe, Somerset. Our team of eight craftsmen, whose combined experience ranges from over 35 years at the bench to our current apprentice, applies the same standards to every piece of bespoke garden joinery leaving the premises. We utilise specialised woodworking machinery alongside careful hand finishing, and our joinery techniques include mortice and tenon, half lap, and dowel joints, selected to suit the structural demands of each individual commission.
Lead times vary depending on the size and complexity of the project but usually range from 4 to 18 weeks. We confirm your lead time at the point of order and keep you informed throughout the manufacturing process. When the work is finished, we will contact you to discuss delivery or installation.
Visit our services for more details on what we offer or call us to discuss your project directly.
Installation, completion, & beyond
Installation timescales vary from a single day for smaller projects to three or four weeks for our largest ones. When we undertake the installation, the same craftsmen who constructed the structure will fit it, bringing the same level of precision to your garden as they do in the workshop. For clients who prefer to install themselves, we can provide detailed instructions for any installation.
Once the work is completed, we review it with you and provide comprehensive care instructions. Our relationship does not end at installation; we remain available for aftercare visits to inspect the structures, perform checks, and carry out any repairs needed over time.
