A grand Georgian townhouse in Chelsea needed a large garden pergola to act as a private retreat within a beautifully designed garden. The client’s vision was ambitious: a structure with the proportions and character of classical Greek architecture, featuring painted columns, sandstone flooring underneath, and a finish that would complement the formal setting. The pergola had to serve as an elegant space for afternoon gatherings as well as evening entertaining.
Stuart Garden designed and constructed a bespoke painted pergola featuring classical Greek-style pillars and decorative trellis surrounds, all finished in white. The design balanced the visual weight of the columns with the lighter character of the trellis, creating a structure that felt both substantial and elegant. The completed pergola sat harmoniously with the sandstone flooring and the planting scheme developed by the client’s garden designer.
The client was so pleased with the pergola that the project did not stop there. Inspired by the outcome, they later commissioned an additional scheme of painted white diamond-patterned trellises throughout the wider garden to visually unify the whole design. The finished garden, integrating the pergola, the trellis, and the designer’s planting scheme, became a harmonious and genuinely elegant outdoor space that reflected the character of the adjoining house.
