Grand Iroko Arbour

The Requirement

A large new-build Neo-Georgian mansion situated within a vast Surrey Hills country estate needed a striking focal point to unify two levels of formal terrace. The landscape architect’s vision involved an impressive arbour, designed to anchor the space visually and provide the terraces with a clear sense of connection and arrival.

The Solution

Working from an initial concept provided by the landscape architect, Stuart Garden translated the brief into detailed technical drawings and three-dimensional visuals, including written specifications for the client’s approval. This collaborative approach ensured the client could see exactly how the finished structure would sit within the landscape before a single piece of timber was cut.

The arbour was crafted from Iroko, a naturally durable hardwood suitable for outdoor use and well suited to the scale and character of the project. It was entirely built within Stuart Garden’s Somerset workshops before being transported and installed on site.

The Outcome

The completed arbour fulfilled everything the landscape architect and client aimed for. Positioned between the two terrace levels, it became the defining feature of the formal garden, offering an elegant transition across the space and a focal point visible from both levels. The client was pleased with the outcome, and the structure remains a centrepiece of the estate’s formal grounds.
