Classic Painted Trellis Scheme with Arches

The Requirement

A private country house in Hampshire faced a familiar challenge for many garden owners: a square, enclosed garden that felt rigid and lacked character. The client aimed to use trellis to reshape the space, adding arches and a secluded seating area to break up the geometry and craft a garden that felt well thought out and welcoming.

The Solution

Stuart Garden crafted a scheme using traditional painted white trellis panels, arches, and a private seating area situated beneath one of the arches. The white finish was selected to brighten the garden, while the arrangement of panels and arches created a sense of rhythm and depth that the square plot previously lacked. A lawn area was added to complement the hard landscaping and offer a natural contrast to the structure.

The Outcome

The finished scheme transformed the garden in both appearance and atmosphere. The painted trellis introduced light and a clear sense of structure, while the arches established a distinct feeling of movement through the space. The client was so pleased with the result that they took on the planting themselves, enjoying the process of working out how their chosen plants would grow against the trellis and through the arches, creating a garden that continued to develop with the seasons.
