Private Estate Owners

Working on an estate commission is, by its nature, a different kind of project. The scale is greater, and the structures we create often form a key part of the grounds’ character. Stuart Garden Architecture has extensive experience at this level and understands both the demands and standards that estate projects require.

Working with your team

Estate commissions rarely start directly with the owner. More often, we are engaged through an estate manager, head gardener, landscape architect, or main contractor, and we are experienced in working within these frameworks. We take our brief from whoever holds it, follow the programme provided, and coordinate our contribution as part of a broader scheme.

We are used to the requirements that large site projects involve. Health and safety documentation, method statements, and risk assessments are a basic part of how we operate. When landscape architects lead the design, we are happy to quote directly from their drawings and specifications and work within the project timeline they have set.

The period and architectural character of the property are always important considerations. Estate commissions often require structures that sit harmoniously within a historic or formal setting, and we apply that sensitivity to every design, whether working from an existing brief or creating something new.

Structures built for estate scale

The most commonly specified structures for estate projects are our largest and most significant: entrance gates, bridges, and pergolas. These projects require careful attention to scale, proportion, and construction quality, as the finished structures will be visible, used, and scrutinised for many years.

Every piece is handcrafted in our Somerset workshops, with timber carefully selected to reflect the history and character of the estate; while also ensuring it is best suited to the application and surrounding environment. Natural finishes feature species such as iroko, oak, cedar, and balau. Painted finishes use accoya, sapele, or redwood. When a specific timber has been chosen for heritage reasons, we adhere to that requirement.

A relationship built over time

Estate work is rarely a single commission. Projects are generally designed and phased through design, planning, and construction stages, and the relationship between an estate and its trusted creators tends to be long-lasting. Repeat business is an important part of our work at this level, and we take pride in maintaining continuity.

Whether you are planning a new scheme or looking for a maker to continue existing work, we welcome the conversation.
